Greece Warns Turkey Conflict Could Escalate into New War in Europe
The Greek government has officially addressed NATO and European Union partners, as well as the UN's leadership, requesting them to condemn the increasingly aggressive rhetoric of Turkish officials and to highlight that the current bilateral tensions could evolve into a second open conflict on European soil.
In letters, copies of which were seen by the Associated Press on Wednesday, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias stressed that the behavior of NATO ally Turkey, a historical regional rival, should be condemned by the three bodies.
Earlier, the European Union expressed concern over statements made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who accused Greece of "occupying" demilitarized islands in the Aegean Sea and threatened to attack.
According to the Turkish state news agency Anadolu, Ankara sent letters this week to the EU, NATO, and the UN explaining its position and perspectives on disputed issues.
