VIDEO: Unions in Indonesia Take to the Streets with Thousands of Workers in Major Cities
The Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (CPI) along with the Indonesian Labor Party took to the streets of the country's major cities on Tuesday, demanding the cancellation of President Joko Widodo's government's decision to raise the price of government-subsidized fuel. This was reported by the Indonesian Tempo news portal, as conveyed by RIA Novosti.
Earlier, the Indonesian government decided to increase the price cap of the cheapest and most popular 90-octane gasoline by 30%, a price that is subsidized by the state.
In Jakarta alone, more than 1,500 people participated in the protest, according to the newspaper. With red scarves on their heads and red and white banners, the protesters marched through the city streets towards the complex of the People’s Representative Council of Indonesia (the permanent house of the country's parliament) and held a long demonstration.
“We demand the cancellation of the decision to raise the fuel price cap. Workers are not ready to support such a decision by the government, and they will organize protests against this decision not only today,” stated CPI President Ikhbal, who is also the leader of the Labor Party.
