Proposal to Rename Kazakhstan's Capital Back to Astana
The parliament of Kazakhstan has proposed to return the former name of the country's capital, Astana. This was reported by RT.
"We consider it wrong to name a city after a person during their lifetime; moreover, the public has also not accepted the capital's new name," said the lawmakers who put forward the proposal.
The parliamentarians believe that it is historically justifiable to revert to the name Astana, which was suggested by Kazakhstan's first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev. It is worth noting that the current president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, had previously proposed renaming the capital to Nursultan.
