Latvia to Prohibit Russian Language in Public Spaces and Labor Market
The Latvian government will discuss a law aimed at restricting the use of the Russian language. According to Bloomberg, this legislation will signify the "end of bilingualism." The country's Ministry of Justice expects the law to be adopted by October 1.
The use of the Russian language in public spaces and the labor market will be prohibited, with any potential exceptions applying only to the use of EU languages.
Previously, AuroraNews.am reported that the National Electronic Media Council (NEPLP) in Latvia had banned the broadcasting of all Russian television channels. In total, 80 Russian TV channels have been prohibited, including Illusion+, Kino24, Mir TV, Hunting and Fishing, Pepper, and Russian Illusion, among others.
