What Does This Mean and What Is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Complaining About? Abrahamyan Comments on the Statement

Member of the National Assembly from the "Honorary Duty" faction, Tigran Abrahamyan, referred to the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia issued a statement addressing the situation surrounding the ‘Lachin Corridor,’ which states: ‘We consider the statements coming from the Azerbaijani side unacceptable, as they attempt to unilaterally change the legal regime established by the 6th point of the trilateral statement in the Lachin Corridor, and reaffirm that the route passing through the Lachin Corridor can only be changed in accordance with the plan approved by the signatory parties of the statement.’

What does this mean, and what is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs complaining about? If a new route is operated along the road being built along the Lachin Corridor, the concept of 'corridor' will cease to be in use and will simply turn into a road.

It should be noted that in the case of a corridor, a 5 km wide area was established along the right and left segments of the road, with 2.5 km on each side, which essentially also served as a buffer zone and was set primarily for security reasons.

In the case of a new route, Azerbaijan is trying to eliminate the buffer zone, the security layer, which could theoretically allow Azerbaijani positions and personnel to be stationed just 5-10 meters away from the road, something that is excluded in the case of the current corridor (a different regime operates around Shushi).

What consequences this dangerous idea will bring, particularly from a security perspective, is already clear, and the routine statements by the Armenian authorities are merely imitative, serving the function of preserving power,” Abrahamyan wrote.
