Unpleasant Odor Coming from Lake Sevan

The "Joghovurd" newspaper reports that not only has the level of Lake Sevan dropped, but the lake has also turned green. The correspondent of "Joghovurd" has visited various coastal areas of Lake Sevan due to numerous reports regarding the lake's greenening.

Many local residents have stated that not only has the lake turned green, but it also emits an unpleasant odor. This can be explained by the increased activity of blue-green algae in the lake. Experts suggest that the main reasons for the intensive growth of blue-green algae and the decline in water quality are the high temperature of the lake's water and the elevated levels of phosphorus.

It is worth noting that in previous years during the summer, a toxic species of blue-green algae known as Anabaena spread in the coastal areas of the lake. Furthermore, it has been revealed that the water level of the lake has decreased; according to the Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center, the level dropped by 2 cm between July 11-17, reaching 1900.69 meters.

It is pertinent to recall Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's promises. On May 10, 2021, in the National Assembly, Nikol Pashinyan stated that the level of Lake Sevan would reach a record high not seen in the last 60 years, but alas, this figure has not been recorded.
