Heavy rain and strong winds in Australia have led to storms and flooding. Thousands of residents have been ordered to evacuate from Australia’s largest city, southwestern Sydney, due to torrential rain and damaging winds that are hitting the east coast and threatening floods in several areas, CNN reports.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of heavy rain that could lead to flooding and landslides along the eastern coastline from Newcastle to Batemans Bay in New South Wales, with the rain expected to intensify over the next two days.

“We are now facing dangers on multiple fronts—flooding, river inundations, and coastal erosion,” said New South Wales Emergency Services Minister Steph Cooke during a media briefing. She urged people to reconsider holiday travel plans. “This is a life-threatening emergency,” Cooke stated.
