If They Aimed to Keep Berdzor, They Would Have Found a Way to Do So: Tigran Poghosyan

After the formation of the new parliament in 2021, MP Tigran Abrahamyan sent two inquiries to the government regarding six settlements in the Kashatagh region, including Berdzor and Agavnov, indicating that the issue has been raised. He was told that everything would be discussed with the public, and nothing would be done in secret. This was stated by former MP and political scientist Tigran Poghosyan in an interview with NEWS.am.

“Now it turns out that these issues have been discussed, and certain actions have been taken. Have they informed the public? Unfortunately, it appears that the politics remain the same; everything is kept secret, and then they say, ‘We will take responsibility.’ Perhaps the responsibility should lie with you for not being able to demonstrate a creative approach or to determine what should have been done to correctly interpret the issues regarding the November 9 statement. Because it is written that there is an alternative road; it is not written that an alternative Lachin corridor is to be opened. This means that the Lachin corridor should remain as it is, with possible bridges and tunnels constructed within it. In other words, if your goal is to keep Berdzor, I am confident you would have found a way to do so,” said Poghosyan, once again expressing his belief that it was possible to retain Berdzor.

“I can’t even mention that there should have been a project during these three years; three years have passed, but we see that they are building a road from the side and are trying to sell it to us as a better quality. I have spoken with specialists who say that under this new road, the main heights will remain under Azerbaijan’s control in terms of the road management. What is its security? There was no intention to keep Berdzor. The goal was to surrender, and everything has been done accordingly. Now, whether they agreed or acted out of fear, what difference does it make for us at this moment? From the defeated authorities, one can only expect further defeats,” he emphasized.

Poghosyan is convinced there will be no peace, just as there hasn’t been for the last thousand years: “The peace agreement is just a piece of paper. Syria and Turkey have also signed agreements, as have Russia and Ukraine. Fear the so-called ‘era of peace.’ An example is Nakhichevan, which has been completely emptied of Armenians over the past 50 years.”
