VIDEO: “I will choose you also because you are a woman” - Gabrielyan

“The law enforcement and security systems in Armenia are quite stereotypical, endowed with a sense of belonging, and operate with inertia and insufficient speed,” stated Vilen Gabrielyan from the parliamentary podium, during a special session of the National Assembly convened for the election of the Prosecutor General. He believes that the main reason for this situation is that these systems are formed on the basis of eroded principles and long-standing ingrained negative practices.

“Accordingly, in my opinion, appointing someone from within these systems, especially after the revolution of 2018, is inappropriate. The individuals who can effectively manage and reform these systems are those who are outside of them, professionals who have vision, as well as the will and determination to realize those visions. Additionally, they must have the ability to look at the system from the outside, which Ms. Vardapetyan has also mentioned, something I greatly appreciate.”

“I am going to choose Ms. Vardapetyan because I consider her a professional, I will choose her for her human qualities, and I apologize, but I must also say that I am choosing her because she is a woman, because women in Armenia are less compromising than men,” the deputy noted.

Gabrielyan concluded his remarks by emphasizing that he reserves the right to voice fair criticism to ensure that Vardapetyan is maximally effective, just, and faithful to her ideals and principles for the sake of justice and the Republic of Armenia.
