How Many Days Will It Take to Restore the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi Road? Works Have Begun
The Georgian authorities have started renovation works on the road leading to the Russian border. The road was damaged due to heavy rains, as reported by the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia to TASS.
"Restoration work on the 136th kilometer of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi road has begun; the section was damaged due to the Terek River overflowing its banks. Representatives of the ministry are on site, and all measures are being taken to restore the road in the shortest possible time," the department noted.
The restoration of the damaged section of the road connecting Georgia with Russia may take approximately 7-10 days. This was also reported to Sputnik Georgia by the Department of Roads of the Ministry of Regional Development.
Earlier, the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia announced that it was temporarily suspending the operation of the "Kazbegi" customs checkpoint at the border with Russia due to damage caused by heavy rains to the inter-state road leading to the checkpoint.
The spokesperson for the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia, Sona Harutyunyan, also noted on her Facebook page that the Larsi checkpoint is closed due to heavy rains and significant precipitation, adding that a part of the international Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi road at the 136th kilometer (neutral zone) was damaged due to the Terek River overflowing.
It should be noted that the heavy rains that fell in Georgia on Sunday evening caused significant damage to the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, which is near the border with the Russian Federation, and the interstate road was also damaged. Local authorities began restoration work on Monday.
