What Are Azerbaijani Schools Teaching? Again, They Claim Others' Territories as Their Own
Azerbaijani textbooks distort not only the history of Armenia and Artsakh but also that of neighboring Iran. For instance, the history textbook for the 7th grade states that the population of northwestern Iran is Turkish, claiming that Iran has occupied their territory. Furthermore, students in Azerbaijani schools study the "National Liberation Struggle in Southern Azerbaijan" as part of Azerbaijan's modern history.
Of course, such claims do not hold up to academic scrutiny, as historical facts indicate that the Seljuks were the first Turkic tribe to penetrate Iranian territory in the 11th century and imposed their linguistic traditions on the region. At the same time, the ethnic composition of historical Atropatene has particularly remained unchanged. Its population has always been and continues to be Iranian.
