Expert Advises What to Do If You See a Snake in an Attack Position
As the weather warms up, the risk of encountering forest-dwelling creatures, including snakes, increases. In the Republic of Armenia, 111 cases of snake bites were recorded in 2021, with 10.8% occurring in Yerevan and 89.2% in the provinces. The highest number of cases were reported in the Armavir (25%) and Ararat (20%) provinces. Moreover, 86.5% of the cases were recorded among men, while 13.5% involved women. A significant majority, 91%, of the incidents were among adults, whereas 9% were among individuals aged 0-18.
To avoid snake bites, it is essential to be aware of some simple rules. On cool days, snakes tend to bask on rocks to warm themselves, and during hot weather, they hide under rocks for shade. If you are walking in areas where the likelihood of encountering snakes is high, wear long boots instead of sandals or cloth shoes. Carry a long stick to push vegetation aside, as reported by Aysor.am.
If you see a snake preparing to strike, stand still and slowly back away. If the snake does bite, it is crucial to get immediate medical attention. First, loosen the buttons of your shirt, collar, and belt, and then bind the bitten limb. If the hand is injured, it should be immobilized so that it does not move while walking. If the foot is injured, a makeshift splint should be prepared to keep the foot elevated. The area around the bite should be treated with potassium permanganate solution, and the victim should be given as much water as possible. An antihistamine can also be administered before urgently transporting the victim to the nearest medical facility for antivenom injection.
It is important to note that during first aid, it is contraindicated to suck blood from the wound, burn the bite area, or make incisions. The use of alcoholic substances is absolutely prohibited, as it enhances the absorption of the snake’s venom and its toxic effects.
