Ministry of Environment Addresses Hunting of Bezoar Goat
The Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia has issued a clarification in response to a media report titled "Poaching in Khosrov Forest: A Red Book listed injured Bezoar Goat found in a water canal." Following the information received, investigators from the Ararat Division of the Police promptly proceeded to the scene.
The Bezoar Goat, registered in the Red Book of Armenia, was found on the road to the Vedi Reservoir, within the administrative territory of the Urtsadzor community. An investigation has been initiated.
The Ministry of Environment condemns such treatment towards animals. Biodiversity is a natural heritage that must be preserved and passed on to future generations, especially considering its vital significance and the ecosystem services it provides. We urge people to refrain from illegal activities and to protect the wildlife of Armenia.
We remind you that according to Armenian law concerning environmental violations, the compensation fee for any damage caused to the animal and plant worlds due to poaching or destruction of a Bezoar Goat (regardless of age) amounts to 3 million AMD per unit. If significant harm is caused by the violation, the offender is subject to criminal liability under Article 294 (Illegal Hunting) of the Criminal Code, with a penalty of a fine ranging from 400 to 600 times the minimum wage or imprisonment for a term of 4-6 months.
We are all responsible for the protection of Armenia's red-listed animal species. We must exhibit conscious and compassionate behavior when interacting with nature.
