Latvia Bans Broadcasting of All Russian Television Channels
The National Council for Electronic Media of Latvia (NEPLP) has prohibited the broadcasting of all Russian television channels. This was announced by the organization's president, Ivars Abolins, as reported by Delfi.lv.
According to him, this decision was made in relation to a new legislative norm that stipulates that channels registered in countries threatening another state's independence and territorial integrity cannot be broadcast in Latvia.
The decision to ban broadcasting will come into effect on June 9 and will remain in force until "Russia ceases its" special military operation in Ukraine and "returns Crimea." A total of 80 Russian television channels have been banned, including Illusion+, Kino24, Mir TV, Hunting and Fishing, and Pepper, among others.
It is noteworthy that on February 24, the National Council for Electronic Media of Latvia banned the broadcasts of "Russia," "Russia 24," and "TV Center" channels. This decision was made in connection to Russia's military special operation in Ukraine. In March, Latvia passed a law on clearing the information space.
