17-Year-Old Detained from France Square: Lawyer Provides Details

On the previous day, a 17-year-old student of Monte Melkonyan, Agasi Khachatryan, was detained in the presence of his parent in connection with an incident that occurred on June 3.

This was stated by Agasi Khachatryan’s lawyer, Sergey Harutyunyan, in a conversation with NEWS.am: “Agasi was detained on charges of inciting the notorious mass riots from France Square in the presence of his parent. He was taken to several police stations and then brought to the investigative body. The MP and I tried to enter, and at first, we were kept waiting, but we eventually managed to enter and saw the child. He was arrested yesterday; I think, like in all cases, they will also want to imprison him.”

The lawyer noted that during the incident on June 3 at the Proshyan-Demirchyan section, the police also beat Agasi, after which he threw a bottle towards the police: “The police bear no responsibility for using brute force, including against women and children, but the child is accused of throwing a bottle as a result of being beaten in a fit of helplessness and anger. They call this self-defense.”

Agasi’s father, Albert Khachatryan, a former head of the village of Taronik and a participant in the 44-day war, told the media that his son was detained by 7-8 individuals in civilian clothing in his presence: “They didn’t even let us approach, saying they had something to clarify with him. They talked for a few minutes without introducing themselves or presenting any documents, telling us that our child was being taken to the Masiv police station. At the Masiv police station, they said no one by that name had been detained. Then we checked and found out he was taken for investigation. We went there, and it turned out that the child was detained for throwing two bottles at the police.”

Albert Khachatryan recounted that his son is a student at the Monte Melkonyan Military School and regrets his actions; however, he threw the bottles out of anger after witnessing the brutality of the police: “My son was beaten by the police that day; they struck him with shields, and there are marks on his back; his clothes were torn. At that time, the police were beating girls and women, which made my child furious,” he said.

Albert Khachatryan noted that he is non-partisan, and he and his three sons hold Russian citizenship but do not intend to leave Armenia; his sons also should live in Armenia.
