Russia Should Not Be Humiliated, Emmanuel Macron Says
French President Emmanuel Macron stated today that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin made a "historical and fundamental mistake" by invading Ukraine and is now "isolated," according to the Daily Mail.
The West has imposed a series of retaliatory sanctions against Russia, including on key sectors such as oil and gas, in response to its decision to invade Ukraine.
"I believe, and I have told Putin, that he has made a historical and fundamental mistake for his people, for himself, and for history. I think he has isolated himself," Macron said in an interview with French regional media.
"Isolation is one thing, but breaking free from it is a difficult road," Macron added, emphasizing that Russia should not be "humiliated."
"Russia should not be humiliated. When one day the military operations come to an end, we can pave the way for a diplomatic exit from the crisis. I am convinced that France should take on the role of mediator," decided Macron.
