How to Cope with the Heat: Ministry Offers Advice

How to cope with the heat? The Armenian Ministry of Health has published several recommendations.

To mitigate or prevent the negative effects of rising temperatures and ultraviolet radiation, and the unwanted overheating of the body, it is essential to follow a few simple rules:

  • Avoid direct sunlight, particularly from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. If possible, stay indoors during this time.
  • Protect yourself from ultraviolet rays by wearing a hat, sunglasses, or using an umbrella.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, preferably made of cotton.
  • Increase fluid intake, especially water and yogurt. Water is the most common and accessible way to quench thirst. Yogurt contains organic acids, proteins, and salts, making it a great thirst quencher.
  • Those with cardiovascular or urinary system conditions should consult their doctor before consuming fluids.
  • Drink cool or chilled liquids, as they are more effective at quenching thirst. Avoid overly cold liquids and try to refrain from spicy and oily foods, opting instead for lighter, easily digestible meals.
  • Consume plenty of fruits and raw vegetables, and avoid excessive caffeine and sugar-containing beverages, whether hot or cold.
  • Avoid staying in poorly ventilated or airless spaces and do not remain in vehicles parked in the sun for an extended period. Never leave children in cars with closed windows.
  • It is advisable for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses to rest or lie down during the hottest hours of the day, as this helps with heat dissipation and circulation.
  • Complete daily tasks during the cooler parts of the day, and avoid heavy physical activity outdoors during peak heat hours.
  • Ensure that the air conditioning's cold air is not directed right at a person, and dress appropriately for the temperature in air-conditioned areas.
