Armenia and China to Collaborate in Satellite Applications

On October 23, a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of satellite imagery application was signed between the Science Committee of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia, the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, and the Center for Satellite Remote Sensing Applications of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People's Republic of China.

The document was signed by the Chairman of the Science Committee, Sargis Hayotsyan, the Director General of the Center, Wang Kwan, and the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, Ashot Saghyan.

According to the Science Committee's website, the aim of the memorandum is to develop Armenian-Chinese scientific cooperation in the use of satellite remote sensing data and technologies.

“Within the framework of the cooperation, the Chinese side will provide the Armenian side, specifically the Institute of Geophysics and Engineering Seismology named after A. Nazarov of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, with satellite remote sensing data on Armenia's natural resources free of charge. Armenian and Chinese specialists will work together in the following areas: processing high-resolution remote sensing data, joint measurement and quality verification, creating and updating geospatial information products based on satellite images of Armenia's natural resources at scales of 1:25,000 and 1:50,000, and applying remote sensing technologies for geospatial data extraction and change detection.

Remote sensing data and GIS systems will be applied in agriculture, forestry, water resource management, land resource management, urban development, environmental monitoring, disaster prevention, and mitigation of their impacts, among other fields,” the statement reads.
