Participant of the protest detained for damaging police vehicle
The investigation department of the Commission of Investigation of the Republic of Armenia continues the preliminary investigation into the criminal case regarding the hooliganism by two participants of a gathering organized by the political opposition at the intersection of Athens and Isakov streets in Yerevan, as well as the use of violence against a representative of the authorities. This was reported by the Commission of Investigation of the Republic of Armenia.
“As a result of the investigative and procedural necessary actions carried out under the criminal case, as well as the urgent measures taken by the employees of the Police of the Republic of Armenia, the identities of two individuals suspected of committing the alleged crime were established, and they were arrested. Based on the collected sufficient evidence, one of them has been charged under the first part of Article 258 and the first part of Article 316 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia, and as a measure of restraint, detention has been applied to him.
Earlier, it was reported that on May 5, 2022, around 12:00 PM, a group of protesters from the political opposition blocked the roadway at the intersection of Athens and Isakov streets in Yerevan, hindering the free movement of other citizens. The employees of the Police of the Republic of Armenia, tasked with maintaining public order, urged them to clear the busy section of the street; however, they did not comply with the police’s legal demands to free the road, which led to their detention. During this, the aforementioned individuals grossly violated public order, showing open disrespect to society, making noise, cursing, and threatening police officers with violence related to their official duties, during which one of them kicked and damaged the rear door and window of a police vehicle.
The investigation continues,” the statement said.
