Signs to be Installed: Pedestrian Safety at Crosswalks to be Enhanced
The newspaper "Joghavorut" reports that informational signs will be installed at pedestrian crossings. The publication learned that the government is proposing to establish these signs in order to enhance the safety of pedestrians crossing the street. However, it is noteworthy that this project was opened for public discussion yesterday, April 26, when a commander of the traffic police escort unit struck and killed a 28-year-old pregnant woman with his vehicle at the intersection of Paronyan and Leo Streets in Yerevan.
It is possible that this incident motivated the development of such a project. According to the Yerevan Municipality, there are 22 intersections in Yerevan that are regulated, equipped with additional signal sections that continuously allow right turns. This has created conflict points between drivers making right turns and pedestrians crossing under a green signal.
Despite the fact that current regulations prioritize pedestrian traffic, a pedestrian can be put at risk due to drivers' negligence. This issue can potentially be resolved through the introduction of appropriate informational signs, which would give drivers turning right or left the opportunity to orient themselves regarding pedestrian activity in the area.
