What Stage Are the Works on Establishing a Bilateral Commission Between Armenia and Azerbaijan In?

The newspaper "Zhoghvorud" reports that following the meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Brussels, initiated by Charles Michel, President of the European Council, the parties issued a statement addressing several issues, including the demarcation and delimitation of Armenia and Azerbaijan's borders.

Among the provisions of the statement was the commitment to create a bilateral commission on delimiting the borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan by the end of April, which would also be empowered to address issues of security and stability along the border.

Only the day before, it became known that Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan had a phone conversation with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. The report indicated that the parties had agreed on the structure of the delimitation and border security commission, and an agreement was reached to hold a meeting regarding the commission soon.

The newspaper "Zhoghvorud" attempted throughout the day to learn what steps the political authorities are taking to form this working group. Although the Foreign Ministry responded to inquiries, there was no further information. The Chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, Eduard Aghajanyan, did not respond to our calls. The Vice-Chairman of the Committee, Haik Mamijanyan, informed us in a conversation that he has no information regarding the formation of the working group.

The authorities' lack of response to our question or our unanswered calls does not necessarily indicate that the aforementioned group has not yet been formed. It is possible that its composition may become known later, as is often the case, after the fact.
