Why Peacekeepers Did Not Allow Opposition Members to Visit Nagorno-Karabakh: Russian Foreign Ministry Clarifies
The visit of Armenian parliament members to Nagorno-Karabakh was not coordinated in advance with the peacekeepers, stated Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“The Russian peacekeeping contingent operates in accordance with the provisions of the statement made by the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia on November 9, 2020. This visit was not coordinated with the command of the peacekeepers in advance,” Zakharova said.
“We believe that the statements made about the actions of Russian peacekeepers allegedly contradicting the provisions of the November 9, 2020 statement do not correspond to reality,” the commentary added.
The Russian Foreign Ministry expects that, considering the incidents that have occurred both in the peacekeepers' responsibility zone and in certain areas along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, both sides will refrain from actions that could escalate the situation in the region.
