Peskov on NATO Expansion

NATO's further expansion, including the accession of Finland and Sweden to the alliance, will not contribute to security in Europe. This was stated by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of Russia, on Monday while responding to questions from reporters regarding the prospects for these countries joining NATO, as reported by TASS.

“The alliance itself is more of a tool for confrontation. It is not a pact that ensures peace and stability. The further expansion of the alliance will, of course, not bring additional security to the European continent,” said the Kremlin spokesperson.

Earlier, it was reported that Sweden and Finland intend to join NATO this summer. This was noted by the British Times newspaper, referencing sources. According to the publication, anonymous US officials have indicated that the membership of these countries has become a topic of discussion during numerous meetings among the foreign ministers of NATO member countries.

“Finland is expected to submit its membership application in June, followed by Sweden,” the publication stated.

European diplomats who participated in the newspaper’s inquiries stated that the inclusion of these countries in the alliance would enhance NATO's capabilities, particularly in the areas of intelligence gathering and strengthening air powers. One diplomat remarked that Sweden and Finland would be “real players” in the alliance.

It is worth noting that NATO’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg had previously stated that Finland and Sweden could rely on expedited procedures for their accession to NATO.
