Cameras Record New Caucasian Wild Boar in the Caucasian Biodiversity Reserve

Cameras in the Caucasian Biodiversity Reserve have recorded the presence of a Caucasian wild boar, according to the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Values (FPWC). The footage reveals an adult male boar identified as a new specimen.

On the same day, within just two hours and approximately three kilometers apart, the cameras also registered a male Neo boar in the reserve. A third specimen, named Nova, is located six kilometers from the other boars, again within the Caucasian Biodiversity Reserve. The fact that three different boars are using the same area of the reserve almost simultaneously is unprecedented.

The population of wild boars worldwide has significantly declined due to several human factors, particularly inter-border tensions, new boundaries, and barriers in our region. This species is at high risk of extinction. Since 2011, when the FPWC began its activities in the area, this is the sixth boar captured by our cameras,” said Ruben Khachatryan, director of the FPWC, adding that this is evidence that the Caucasian Biodiversity Reserve is an effective conservation format.

The FPWC was able to identify the new boar thanks to rangers who are equipped with up-to-date knowledge about tracking boars and finding optimal locations for camera installations. In this context, conducting research to understand the potential boar population, as well as all the threats that the boar may face due to the presence of new borders and obstacles for safe movement, is also very important.

It is also noteworthy that the FPWC has announced a competition to name the boar. The Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Values has been operational since 2002 and is a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The foundation's key focus is the conservation of Armenia's unique fauna and flora, utilizing the latest technologies and modern models.
