The US Reveals Russia's Main Weapon Used in Its Special Operation in Ukraine

The Russian special operation in Ukraine differs from previous ones due to the active use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), writes Sam Cranni-Evans, a columnist for the American National Interest magazine, as reported by RIA Novosti.

According to an analytical researcher at the Royal United Services Institute, Russian UAVs, particularly Orion, Orlan, Eleron, and Tachyon, perform three important tasks in Ukraine: supporting columns and conducting counter-diversion intelligence, detecting artillery, and coordinating and providing fire support.

“The video released by the Russian Ministry of Defense shows that UAVs, often coordinated with artillery strikes from 'Orlan-10,' include the use of 152 mm laser-guided munitions, such as the '2K25 Krasnopol.' As some strikes in Ukraine appear to be aimed at individual vehicles, it is possible that Russian artillery forces choose to use reasonably sufficient capabilities rather than excessive ones,” noted the author.

Cranni-Evans particularly highlighted the reconnaissance and strike functions of Russian UAVs, which have been demonstrated, for example, by the illicit placement of APU equipment in civilian objects. “A vivid example of this in Ukraine was the missile strike on the Retroville shopping center. UAV footage can be used to coordinate the initial long-range missile strike that destroyed several Ukrainian missile launchers. These capabilities will enhance Russia's speed, response, and the precision with which it can attack Ukrainian forces,” the article concludes.
