UN Unaware of Any Biological Weapons Programs in Ukraine
The UN is unaware of any biological weapons programs in Ukraine. This was reiterated on Friday by Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament, in response to new allegations from Russia claiming it has evidence to the contrary.
“The UN knows nothing about any biological weapons program in Ukraine,” Nakamitsu stated during an emergency meeting called by Moscow.
He also recalled that the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention prohibits the development, production, acquisition, transfer, stockpiling, and use of biological and toxin weapons.
Earlier, Igor Kirilov, head of the Russian Armed Forces’ radiation, chemical, and biological defense troops, reported that Russia believes components of biological weapons have been developed on Ukrainian territory.
