Process of Granting Citizenship in Armenia to be Simplified
The Armenian government intends to simplify the process of granting citizenship of the Republic of Armenia. Sources close to the government, as reported by the newspaper "Zhoghvorud," indicate that a draft proposal for amending the citizenship granting or restoration process is currently in the government cabinet. Once it is finalized, it will be sent to the parliament for consideration by the deputies.
According to experts, simplifying the citizenship process has both positive and negative aspects. The positive side is that our compatriots in the diaspora will no longer have to wait for years and deal with bureaucratic hurdles to be recognized as citizens of Armenia.
On the negative side, with the unblocking of communications and the move towards fostering good neighborly relations with adversarial neighbors, there is a significant risk that individuals from Turkey and Azerbaijan may also express an interest in obtaining Armenian citizenship, and an easier process could potentially grant them access to Armenian passports as well.
