Ukrainian EU Membership Would Be Self-Destructive for the European Union, Says Russian Foreign Ministry
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko has stated that there is indeed a direct threat of confrontation between the Russian Federation and NATO. This was reported by РИА Новости.
“Risks are certainly emerging, and we are, of course, concerned about the supply of weapons; all of this is very dangerous,” Grushko said.
According to him, there are no guarantees to exclude further incidents.
The issue of security guarantees remains a key priority for the Russian Federation in the long term, according to Grushko. “For us, if we speak about the long-term interests of Russia's security, naturally, the issue of guarantees will remain a key factor both in the short and long term,” the deputy minister emphasized.
Grushko also highlighted the fact that the Russian Federation will continue to insist on legal guarantees against NATO’s eastward expansion.
He also did not rule out that Ukraine's accelerated accession to the EU could be self-destructive for the latter: “Accepting a state among its ranks that is nationalist, where Nazi groups govern the country, in my opinion, is self-destructive for the European Union itself,” he added.
Earlier, NATO stated that they would not use military force to resolve the issue concerning Ukraine.
