Parliament Begins Work with One Minute of Silence

Today, the parliament commenced its regular four-day session with one minute of silence, honoring the memory of the victims of March 1, 2008.

“Today is March 1, and 14 years ago, during the events that took place in the center of Yerevan, 10 citizens of the Republic of Armenia lost their lives—8 civilians and 2 police officers,” reminded Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Hakob Arshakyan, proposing the minute of silence to respect their memory.

Recall that on February 24, 2008, Armenia's Central Electoral Commission announced that Serge Sargsyan won the elections. People took to the streets demanding a recount of the votes. On the evening of March 1, military and police units carried out special operations in the central streets of Yerevan to disperse the protesters using firearms, explosives, and special means. Hundreds were injured, and 8 civilians and 2 police officers were killed.
