Armenia Must Be Prepared for Consequences, Hovhannisyan on Situation in Ukraine

The Republic of Armenia must be prepared for the consequences that may arise from the development of the Russian-Ukrainian situation. This opinion was expressed by Edward Hovhannisyan, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the National Assembly and a member of the ruling My Step Alliance, during a conversation with journalists.

“Armenia has expressed its position at the level of the Prime Minister. We are deeply concerned about the current situation. Having felt the consequences of war on our own skin, we are able to empathize and assess the situation. Wars have very painful consequences, and Armenia is, of course, an advocate for resolving issues through peace and negotiation,” said Hovhannisyan.

He noted that all of this is worrying, and Armenia, as a member of the international community, is concerned about the possible consequences of this process in the region.

Hovhannisyan assured that Armenia is closely following the developments and that the current task for Armenia is to assess the risks in the region as best as possible and to be proactive. He concluded his remarks by stating that the most desirable development would be an immediate cessation of hostilities, although this is beyond Armenia's control.

It is worth recalling that in the early hours of February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a special military operation against Ukraine, as the self-proclaimed Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics requested assistance. In a televised address to the Russians, he stated that the circumstances require decisive and immediate action.

Later, the Russian Ministry of Defense emphasized that the Russian armed forces are not delivering any missile, aviation, or artillery strikes on Ukrainian cities; instead, they are using high-precision means to disable military infrastructure, air defense facilities, military airports, and aviation.
