Inmate Found Hanging with Bed Sheet at Nubarashen Penitentiary

The Prison Service has issued a statement regarding an incident that occurred on February 21, 2022, around 9:20 PM, at the Nubarashen penitentiary of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia.

The lifeless body of inmate K. A., born in 1981 and sentenced under Article 104, Part 1 of the RA Criminal Code in 2015, was discovered hanging from the bars of his cell window using a bed sheet.

During his imprisonment, K. A. had a history of self-harming behavior and had previously attempted suicide in 2020, an attempt that was thwarted by the facility's staff.

K. A. suffered from multiple health issues and had received treatment at the Prison Hospital on various occasions, remaining under the continuous supervision of a psychiatrist.

Specialists from the facility's social, psychological, and legal affairs department had conducted individual sessions with the inmate, focusing on stabilizing his emotional state and providing relevant explanations and consultations regarding the negative consequences of hunger strikes and self-harm, his rights, as well as addressing the issues and requests he presented through the proper legal channels.

Materials are being prepared in the investigative department of the Erevan City Investigative Administration concerning the incident.
