What are the Police Searching For? Commentary from the Deputy Chief of Police
The police are implementing enhanced surveillance in various parts of Yerevan. ArmLur.am's camera captured footage of police stopping vehicles and conducting searches. The media outlet spoke with Ara Fidanyan, the Deputy Chief of Police of Armenia, to clarify the reasons behind these searches.
Deputy Chief Fidanyan stated that these are preventive measures. Discussing such initiatives, he mentioned that updates on the results are regularly provided and that the outcome is quite significant.
Deputy Chief Fidanyan assured that there is no need for concern, as serious preventive measures are being undertaken. Some experts on the internet have pointed out that the police do not have the right to search vehicles under the guise of enhanced service without a court order, given that the legal status of a vehicle is equivalent to that of a home or apartment.
In a conversation with Auroranews, Tigran Keyan, president of the Driver's NGO, indicated that drivers should distinguish between a search and an inspection. Currently, the police are conducting inspections, which is a somewhat different action than a search.
