How Many People Died During Recent Events in Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has stated that the country does not require an international investigation into the January incidents, asserting that reports of torture in prisons against detained citizens are exaggerated. This was reported by TASS, citing an interview with the president on the state television channel Khabar.
Tokayev acknowledged that there were peaceful protesters during the January events but claimed that security forces did not open fire on them. The West had criticized Tokayev for issuing a shoot-to-kill order without warning during the January events.
According to official figures, 225 people died as a result of the violence in Kazakhstan, including 19 members of the security forces.
