The 'I Have Honor' Faction Develops a Bill to Create an Ethics Commission to Review Alexanyan's Conduct
The opposition 'I Have Honor' faction is drafting a bill to establish an ethics commission. The initiative comes after ruling party MP Vahagn Alexanyan's remarks against journalists.
MP Taguhi Tovmasyan from 'I Have Honor' stated that the bill will be presented for circulation within a few days, as reported by azatutyun.am.
"We must adequately assess both the situation and the MP's behavior, because one should never say such things about any professional equivalence, regardless of one's feelings, especially from the country's number one podium," she asserted.
While the content of the bill has not been detailed, she indicated that Alexanyan's speech is not the only case they will address, adding that there are other instances that need discussion: "Unfortunately, there are many occasions."
The ruling 'Civil Contract' faction's MP Alexanyan remarked last week about television stations, stating that almost all have spread hate speech after the war and called journalists “verbal prostitutes.” He specifically stated, “They are not journalists; they are verbal prostitutes.”
More than ten journalistic organizations have condemned the behavior of the government representative and demanded that the National Assembly form an ethics commission to address the issue.
Meanwhile, the opposition 'Armenia' faction has yet to take a stance on joining the 'I Have Honor' initiative. MP Gegham Manukyan noted that the issue has not been discussed yet: "Since there is no decision, I will refrain, but an ethics commission is in itself a very important tool to set an example for all other political figures on how not to communicate with the media."
