Yemen Prison Targeted by Airstrikes: Casualties Reported
Airstrikes by the Saudi Arabia-led coalition have resulted in the deaths of at least 87 individuals and injured another 226 at a prison in Yemen. This was announced by Najib Al-Kubati, the deputy health minister in the Houthi government.
On January 21, reports emerged indicating that the coalition's combat aircraft bombed a correctional facility in Yemen's Saada province. Previously, the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders reported that the airstrike had resulted in 70 deaths and injuries to around 140 individuals.
Last night, the coalition issued a statement denying its involvement in the attack, labeling all reports as unfounded and inaccurate.
The conflict in Yemen has been ongoing since August 2014. It intensified following the Arab coalition's intervention in March 2015, aimed at supporting the armed forces loyal to President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. The war has led to one of the world's largest humanitarian crises. According to the UN, over 24 million Yemenis—approximately 80 percent of the country's population—require humanitarian assistance, and the number of internally displaced persons exceeds 4 million.
