Severe Cold Expected in Gyumri with Temperatures Dropping to -30 Degrees; Blizzard Conditions in Shirak

The cold winds and blizzards that started the day before continue in the Shirak region. In many shelters, the smoke from stoves fills the rooms due to the wind, forcing many families to huddle around cold stoves. This was reported by Vahan Tumasyan, the president of the Shirak Center NGO, which has been supporting underprivileged families in the region with the help of benefactors for many years.

He specifically noted, “The temperature will drop further starting tomorrow. In Gyumri, temperatures are expected to reach as low as -30 degrees, naturally, in the mountainous villages of the region, it will be at least 8-10 degrees colder.”

“Families sheltered in domik (temporary houses) and semi-collapsed structures have not even received light support in terms of fuel, or at least a warning about the conditions. To be honest, I don’t understand why several media outlets reported in recent days that the weather would warm by 9-10 degrees in the coming days. As a typical Gyumri resident would say, they’ve completely lost their mind.”

“Moreover, an exception should be made for families living in extremely difficult social conditions, allowing them not to pay utility bills for January, and not to be deprived of electricity and gas for at least one or two months — let them be human for once.”
