Mamikon Aslanyan to Remain in Custody: Court Rejects Appeal
The Court of Appeals, presided by Rubik Mkrtchyan, today, January 19, rejected the appeal from the lawyers of Mamikon Aslanyan, a candidate for the position of Vanadzor's mayor, regarding the change of the detention measure imposed on him.
In an interview with NEWS.am, lawyer Ruben Hakobyan stated that the recent events were not a legal process, but rather an act of injustice. Aslanyan's lawyers plan to appeal the decision of the Court of Appeals to a higher court.
It should be noted that the first session of the newly elected Vanadzor city council was scheduled for December 17. However, just a day prior, Mamikon Aslanyan was arrested and subsequently detained. He has been charged with abuse of official authority, exceeding official powers, and features of official forgery. Aslanyan denies the charges against him, and his lawyers assert that he is being subjected to political persecution.
