EU Spokesperson: Meeting of Armenian and Turkish Envoys Was an Important Step Forward
The EU welcomes the readiness of Armenia and Turkey to work on normalizing relations between the two countries and appointing special representatives for this purpose. According to Armenpress, this statement was made by Peter Stano, spokesperson for the European External Action Service.
“The first meeting of special envoys this Friday was an important step forward, and the European Union calls on Turkey and Armenia to put forth further efforts in this direction. Any concrete steps toward normalizing relations would be good news for regional stability, reconciliation, and prospects for economic development,” said Stano.
The spokesperson emphasized that the normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey is of key importance for the EU regarding its cooperation with both countries. “Since 2014, the EU has allocated over €4.5 million for projects aimed at paving the way for the normalization of relations in various fields, such as economy, culture, education, and information exchange. The EU is ready to provide further support and may take additional steps toward normalizing relations,” Stano concluded.
