Russia Seriously Concerned About Escalating Situation at Armenian-Azerbaijani Border: Zakharova

Russia is seriously concerned about the escalation of the situation at the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and calls for an abstention from the use of force. According to a report by Armenpress, this was stated by the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, during a press briefing, addressing a question about provocations carried out by the Azerbaijani side on January 11.

“We are very concerned about the escalation at the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. We urge both sides to refrain from the use of force and resolve all contentious issues exclusively through political and diplomatic means,” Zakharova stated.

According to her, the main “prescription” for ensuring stability and security in the region in the long term is the prompt initiation of the border delimitation process, which will be followed by border demarcation. Zakharova reminded that this was stipulated in the joint statement made by the leaders of Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan in Sochi last year.

She emphasized the need to undertake work for the establishment of the appropriate bilateral commission, assuring that Russia is ready to provide comprehensive advisory assistance.

The Azerbaijani armed forces units again resorted to provocation on January 11, opening fire towards the Armenian combat positions located in the Vorotan area of Gegharkunik Province, which resulted in gunfire exchanges. Three Armenian servicemen were killed.
