Aliyev Threatens Again: 'If They Don't Want, Fine, We'll See What Happens Later'
Armenians understand that in the absence of a peace treaty and in the presence of a strong Azerbaijan, they will have concerns. On the other hand, they realize that if a peace treaty is to be signed, it must necessarily contain provisions regarding mutual recognition of territorial integrity, and they must be prepared for that. This was stated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during an interview with a local media outlet.
As they say, Armenians are caught between two rocks. But they need to make a choice, the right choice. It is not guaranteed that our friendly attitude will remain forever, and those offers will always be on the table. If they do not want to recognize our territorial integrity, then we will not recognize theirs either. We have a hundredfold more reasons for that. Because everyone, including the global community, is well aware that in November 1920, our historical land, Zangezur, was separated from us and joined Armenia. Similar is the case with Goycha (referring to Lake Sevan – Ed.). The city of Irevan (Yerevan – Ed.) was handed over to Armenia on May 29, 1918. In other words, we have many reasons to refuse recognizing Armenia’s territorial integrity.
However, despite this, for the sake of future peace, for the improvement of relations between the countries, we are ready for that. But I cannot guarantee that it will be the same in six months. If they don't want, fine, let it be so. Then we will see what happens,” said Aliyev.
