Several Armenian Place Names Replaced with Azerbaijani on Google
Several Armenian place names in territories under Azerbaijan's control in Karabakh have been replaced with Azerbaijani names in the Google Maps application. This was stated by Samedin Asadov, the head of the Azerbaijani space agency (Azercosmos), as reported by RIA Novosti.
In December, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially approached Google, requesting the removal of Armenian names from places in Karabakh that are under Baku's control.
In January, the Human Rights Ombudsman of Artsakh, Gegham Stepanyan, sent a letter to Google urging the company not to remove Armenian geographical names from digital maps. Now, the names of cities and regions in Karabakh under Azerbaijan's control are indicated in both Azerbaijani and Armenian on Google Maps.
Asadov stated, “The Electronic Security Center under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan continues negotiations with Google to display the names of settlements in Karabakh in Azerbaijani in the company's search engine maps. As a result of this collaboration, several names have already been changed.” He also expressed confidence that in the future, the search engine will completely remove Armenian geographical names from the maps of Karabakh.
