CSTO Troops to be Withdrawn from Kazakhstan in Phased Manner: Tokayev

The main mission of the CSTO peacekeeping forces in Kazakhstan has concluded. This was announced today, January 11, by the country’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

According to Sputnik, the Kazakh leader stated that the withdrawal of the peacekeeping forces will commence in two days and will take no longer than 10 days.

It is worth recalling that mass protests began in Kazakhstan on the first days of January 2022. Clashes occurred in Almaty on January 4 and 5 between protesters and security forces. On January 5, President Tokayev declared a two-week state of emergency in the country, seeking assistance from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which is chaired this year by Armenia.

In order to stabilize the situation, the CSTO dispatched a peacekeeping contingent to Kazakhstan, including 100 servicemen from Armenia.
