VIDEO: Parakar Has Become a Bone of Contention; No Success in Electing a Community Mayor
The chairwoman of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs, Taguhi Tovmasyan, writes on her social media page: “The atmosphere of love and solidarity has nothing to do with local government elections. For almost a month, we have witnessed political persecution in various communities, and it seems that illegal mechanisms are being employed by the authorities, with the sole purpose of ensuring that a mayor is elected from the candidates approved by the government.
Parakar has long become a bone of contention. The council sessions are being disrupted, and thus, a mayor has not been elected. The ruling party has suffered a defeat, while the opposition has failed to gather 50%+1 of the votes. The Administrative Court invalidated the decision of the Parakar council regarding the selection of the community leader. Today, during the scheduled session, the council was supposed to try again to elect a mayor. But it is not succeeding.
Meanwhile, representatives of the government, who advocate for the principles of love and solidarity, once again exert disproportionate force against the citizens of the Republic of Armenia. The authorities continuously use tools to suppress the proud citizens of Armenia, violating the rights of citizens who have the right to express their complaints.
Once again, I urge that the police must demonstrate political neutrality by adhering strictly to the letter of the law,” wrote Taguhi Tovmasyan, along with a video post.
