“This legitimate expectation has exceptional public demand”: Aram Vardevanyan calls for an appeal to CSTO
Member of the National Assembly from the “Hayastan” faction, Aram Vardevanyan, wrote on his Facebook page:
“On December 10, 2021, the official statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia recorded that ‘the armed units of Azerbaijan have illegally invaded the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia since May of this year and have occupied more than 40 square kilometers of territory.’ The 4th article of the CSTO Collective Security Treaty (do not confuse with the CSTO charter) stipulates that if any member state is subjected to armed aggression by any state or group of states, it will be considered aggression against all participant states of this treaty. The second paragraph of the same article ‘anticipates’ an APPEAL by that member state on this matter.
Although Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s previous statements indicate that Armenia did NOT MAKE AN APPEAL based on the 4th article, taking into account the statement that it was precisely Armenia and this government that activated the CSTO ‘mechanisms’, a new situation has effectively arisen. Therefore, based on the fact that the aggression of the Azerbaijani armed forces against Armenia and the occupation of our sovereign territory still exists, I expect similar actions (an appeal) from the officials of Armenia regarding the implementation of the CSTO mechanisms. This legitimate expectation has exceptional public demand.”
