Armen Sarkissian Declares Conditions for Resignation in The Spectator World

In order to recover and rebuild, Armenia must first abandon its historical habit of seeking "saviors" and take responsibility for its own future, stated Armenian President Armen Sarkissian in an interview with the reputable international publication The Spectator World, according to the official website of the president.

The article, authored by prominent writer and journalist Kapil Komireddi, notes that he visited Armenia months ago and conducted numerous interviews, including with Sarkissian.

“No external support can revive a people that refuses to leverage its own strengths. Azerbaijan has significantly outpaced us because it has oil revenues. But what value will oil have one or two generations from now?” said Sarkissian.

When asked if he is prepared to resign to accelerate the implementation of reforms, he responded that being the president of Armenia is the greatest honor of his life. “However, it is not to feel respected that I agreed to this position. I came to serve Armenia. If we adopt a new Constitution, I will not remain in this position for a second longer if it can in any way hinder its implementation and the country's progress,” he added.

In response to the question of how to reconstruct a nation disheartened by external aggression and internal strife, Sarkissian stated that we must start by looking for mistakes within. The president insists that this challenging period of “national depression” can be transformed into an opportunity for “national awakening.”
