VIDEO: What is Happening in Kazakhstan Today
Protests that have lasted several days in Kazakhstan have resumed this morning, with thousands of people taking to the streets.
It is important to note that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed decrees imposing a state of emergency in Almaty and Mangystau region from January 5-19 to ensure public safety. The protests have escalated into unrest.
The situation began following a doubling of the price of liquefied gas in the country's west, reaching 120 tenge per liter. Initially, this sparked protests in the Mangystau region, which spread to other areas. Numerous rallies have taken place in Aktau, Zhanaozen, and Atyrau cities. Authorities were compelled to close Republic Square in Almaty.
Activists have lit bonfires and there have been assaults on police officers. There are reports of arrests. Additionally, members of the government commission, during a meeting with protesters in Aktau, agreed to reduce the price of liquefied gas to 50 tenge per liter.
