Russia to Seek Security Guarantees from the US in Negotiations, Says Zakharova

On January 10, during negotiations with the United States in Geneva, the Russian Federation will strive to obtain robust security guarantees regarding its national safety from the American side. This was announced by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing on Thursday.

“The agenda, of course, includes the discussion of two fundamental draft documents transmitted by the US to Russia on December 15—agreements regarding security guarantees between the Russian Federation and the United States, as well as measures related to security between the Russian Federation and NATO member countries. During the negotiations, we will seek to receive strong legal guarantees from the US regarding the national security of the Russian Federation, specifically the non-expansion of NATO eastward and the non-deployment of weapon systems threatening Russia near our borders,” emphasized the diplomat.

The official representative of the Foreign Ministry noted that the meeting regarding security guarantees for the Russian Federation will take place on January 10, with no alternative date available. “On January 10, negotiations are scheduled in Geneva in the format of an interdepartmental delegation between Russia and the US. The Russian delegation will be headed by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, while the American side will be represented by Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman,” she stated.
