Dzhigarkhanyan's Theater Merges with Satire Theater in Moscow

The Armen Dzhigarkhanyan Dramatic Theater and the Satire Theater have united as one entity. This was announced today by RIA Novosti, referencing the press service of the Moscow city government.

 "By the order of the Department of Culture of Moscow, the Moscow Dramatic Theater led by Armen Dzhigarkhanyan has been reorganized to merge with the Academic Satire Theater of Moscow," the announcement stated.

It was noted that Sergey Gazarov will become the artistic director. He has been leading the Satire Theater since October 2020 and, since December of the same year, has also been in charge of Dzhigarkhanyan's theater.

Gazarov himself stated that he has had sufficient time to familiarize himself with the Satire Theater and its troupe, as well as to understand the scope of challenges facing it. Significant work has also been carried out with Dzhigarkhanyan's theater, culminating in a major premiere in the new theatrical season.

"I believe we have done well. Working at the Satire Theater inspires a wide range of large-scale ideas, but, of course, it requires enormous involvement," the artistic director emphasized.

He promised to preserve the unique characteristics of both institutions, adding that their merger would create new opportunities for the troupes to create and implement new ideas through collaboration.

 "A strong creative entity uniting four stages appears on the theatrical map of Moscow, both in the city center with an already established audience and in the university area with its own distinct audience. At the same time, naturally, the name of Armen Borisovich will not only be preserved but will also remain alongside those great friends and colleagues with whom the Satire Theater has become famous," Gazarov added.

In September, Dzhigarkhanyan's theater changed its name to "Armen Dzhigarkhanyan's Progress Stage" (Прогресс Сцена Армена Джигарханяна). As Gazarov explained, the word "progress" is a historical name returned to the building, where a cinema of the same name was previously located.
