Maroonyan Still Remains a Member of Yerevan City Council
Hayk Maroonyan has not yet resigned from his mandate as a member of the Yerevan City Council. This was stated by the head of the Information and Public Relations Department of the Yerevan Municipality, Yosif Kubatyan, in an interview with 24News.
Kubatyan noted that Maroonyan still continues to be a member of the council. When asked if there are plans for changes in the deputy mayors, Kubatyan replied that at least one change is expected. “Because Hrachya Sargsyan was the deputy mayor,” he mentioned.
Kubatyan said he is not aware of who the candidate for the first deputy mayor is. “The first deputy mayor must be a member of the council. This matter is already in the council’s domain, it will be the council that selects, I cannot answer that question,” he concluded.
Member of the “My Step” faction in the Yerevan City Council, and head of the Market Surveillance Inspection Body, Armen Kotolyan told 24News that he still does not have information on who will be the new first deputy mayor, or whether changes in other deputy mayors are planned. “When he firmly assumes the position of mayor, then this matter should be discussed with Mr. Sargsyan. But until then, we haven’t had discussions in the faction, and I don’t have any such information to share with you,” he concluded.
We remind you that yesterday, 57 members of the council participated in a closed, secret ballot, of which 44 voted in favor of the motion to express distrust in Maroonyan and elect Sargsyan as mayor, while 10 voted against. Three ballots were deemed invalid. In his speech yesterday, Hayk Maroonyan characterized the dismissal process as a “coup,” while the ruling majority in the council justified the dismissal process citing his exit from the ruling “Civil Contract” party.
