Electricity Rates to Increase from February

The electricity rates in Armenia are set to increase, as announced by Ashot Ulikhanyan, head of the tariff policy department of the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC), according to aysor.am.

“If we were to maintain the current electricity rates, we would face a financial gap of about 23.8 billion drams in the system. If the rate increase does not happen, we would face problems next year regarding uninterrupted and reliable electricity supply due to this financial gap,” Ulikhanyan explained during a press conference regarding the reasons for the increase in electricity tariffs.

He indicated how much the electricity rate will rise, stating, “The weighted average rate is increasing by 4.7 drams. There are differentiated prices based on voltage levels. For all consumers, the average price will approximately be 41 drams per kWh, which should increase by 4.7 drams.”

A representative from the PSRC informed that the new rates will take effect from February 1, provided the relevant decision is made during the commission's meeting on December 29.

Ulikhanyan also clarified that the proposal for the increase did not come from electricity producing companies; rather, it is an initiative of the PSRC. It is noteworthy that discussions related to the tariffs of the electricity system are ongoing within the PSRC, involving representatives from consumer rights protection organizations and companies in the sector.
